Washington, DC — September 18, 2018 — Peace Action has announced its endorsement of Rashida Tlaib for Congress in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. Peace Action is a national grassroots organization working to advance nuclear disarmament, promote government spending priorities that support human needs, encourage real security through international cooperation and human rights, and support nonmilitary solutions to international conflicts.

“I’m honored to have Peace Action’s endorsement in this pivotal election, and eager to work with them to make great strides towards a more peaceful world,” said Tlaib. “I believe we’re all safest when we solve conflicts without bloodshed, when we invest in our communities instead of more profits for weapons companies, and when we work together with other countries to address threats like climate change that we can’t take on alone.”

Paul Kawika Martin, Senior Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Peace Action, who also directs Peace Action’s PAC, said of the candidate, “Peace Action is delighted to endorse Rashida Tlaib for Congress. From her staunch opposition to dangerous and discriminatory policies like President Trump’s Muslim ban, to her support for legislation to ensure no president can launch a nuclear first strike without Congress, she’s committed to defending our nation’s true interests, whether they’re under threat from the White House or from Cold War status quos that should have ended long ago.”

Rev. Rich Peacock, Peace Action of Michigan’s board co-chair, concluded, “Rashida Tlaib is an exceptional progressive candidate who knows what we stand to gain by adopting a more peaceful approach to foreign policy, and what we stand to lose if we stay the course of endless war and wasteful Pentagon spending. She believes we can afford to keep our country safe and invest far more in fundamental human needs like education and healthcare by transitioning from a war economy to a peace economy that benefits Detroiters and Michiganders.”

Rashida Tlaib won the Democratic Primary in Michigan’s 13th Congressional district on August 7th, 2018, and with no Republican opponent on the ballot in November, is poised to become one of the first Muslim women to serve in Congress, alongside Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar. In Washington, Rashida has pledged to take on powerful corporate interests, fight for Medicare-for-All, and bring resources back to her district – the third poorest in the country. Rashida first made history in 2008, becoming the first Muslim woman elected to the Michigan Legislature, where she served three terms as a State Representative and established a one-of-a-kind neighborhood service center where thousands of families received help.
