Washington, D.C. — February 23, 2017 — In response to President Trump reiterating his opposition to the New START treaty and saying that the U.S. is “going to be at the top of the pack” in regards to our nuclear arsenal, Jon Rainwater, executive director of the United States’ largest grassroots peace organization, Peace Action, released the following statement:

“President Trump has doubled down on his baseless opposition to a nuclear treaty that has enjoyed strong bipartisan support. In denouncing New START once again, Trump is slamming the door on the possibility for extending it, and reversing course on America’s commitment to reducing nuclear arsenals.

“In the same breath, Trump claimed to dream of a world without nuclear weapons and committed to ramp up the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Trump drew sharp criticism from foreign policy experts for his uneducated statements on nuclear weapons during the campaign. Now that these statements are the starting to morph into policy the world is getting less safe with each passing day.”
