It’s Time to Bring Democracy Back Home
I have held my opinion on this blog from some months now regarding the Jena 6 but I cannot any longer. I felt, at first, that this was not part of our mission at Peace Action. Then I received a press release from the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. The release condemns the Islamophobic comments of Rep. Peter King (R-NY). This got me thinking. The media and Congress shake their fingers at the Iraqi government for not overcoming ‘ethic tension’ and not ‘moving forward with the democracy’ – how can we ‘promote democracy’ abroad while we do not uphold it here at home?
The charges brought against these 6 teenagers for fighting at an off-campus party includes attempted murder and theft.
The theft charge stems from one white kid bringing a gun into the house party and threatening the black kids. The black child being charged with theft took that gun away from the fight to eliminate the threat.
The potential murder weapon was not the gun, it was a shoe. A black kid threatened a white kid with a shoe after taking the white kid’s gun – and now that black kid is in jail.
None of the white children have been charged with anything. They were never punished for hanging nooses from a tree to spark the fighting in the first place. They have never been punished for fighting. The town believes everyone in the country is ‘blowing this out of proportion.” This is the most disgusting breech of our justice system since Alberto’s political firings came to light. It’s particularly disturbing how closely these two are chronologically – tells you something about the state of our own ‘democratic’ justice system.
Rep. King believes Muslims are “an enemy living amongst us.” In an interview with The Politico, Rep. King said, “Unfortunately, we have too many mosques in this country. There are too many people who are sympathetic to radical Islam. We should be looking at them more carefully. As the Bush Administration beats the war drum toward Iran telling us they hate freedom, they practice state sponsored discrimination, and we must save the innocent Iranians from their dictator I say, people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
We have systemic racism that wasn’t discussed until Katrina hit and with the Jena 6 is still a controversial issue. In an interview with USA Today one local resident called the protest a “knee jerk reaction.” We have justice system that is far form blind – more like politically motivated. We have a dictator who shuns the democratic system by ‘staying HIS course.’ More than ever, I am dedicated to eliminating our military presence around the world and focused on cleaning our own house. I demand justice in Jena, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Columbia, Venezuela, Washington, all over the U.S. and the world. I am reminded of a bumper sticker that speaks closely to my heart: “Know Justice, Know Peace. No Justice, No Peace.”
Barbara, I second your analysis of America not living up to what we are promoting abroad. The Jena Six incident is a result of deeply rooted racism and injustice that has never been properly addressed in our country. When I first heard of what happened in Jena, I thought it was a fabricated story circulating on the Internet. It wasn’t until some members of the media (not surprisingly much later) began speaking about it. I was definitely taken aback for two reasons.
1. The charges were outrageous. Not just because they are African- Americans, but they are children who were being treated as murderers.
2. This tragedy set us back as a country 50 years, but at least it opened up a wound that never healed, but was simply covered but still festering.
To some, this incident is probably viewed as another “Oh here they are complaining again.” situation, while to others who are aware and fed up with these type of situations in our country view it as an opportunity to confront it, address it and work toward some solutions.
You know, it amazes me how we’re able to spend billions of dollars in Iraq to help institute democracy, but we can’t afford additional voting machines in predominantly African-American and Latino communities because they’re “too expensive.” We would rather have our citizens wait in line for hours just to cast a vote.
Until we are able to sincerely address discrimination against, and the disenfranchisement of certain people in our country, our intentions to “democratize” the world will never be viewed as genuine.

I am an alien, living in the US. I came here to live in a great country. Now, living so close, I see that structure of this great nation is cracking. Cracking under the weight of its own ethnic diversity. I agree with all the comments about Jenas, But….you will never rid yourself of this blight until you call those kids AMERICANS. They are not African Americans, they probably have never been out of the state. You call for unity and then in the same breath partition and sub divide your culture. Stop harking back to the past. Move forward, black, white, yellow, red you are all Americans. When you learn to stop dividing the sand pit up among your “heritage” you may eventually find time to play in it and enjoy the bounty that this country has to offer.

This may take some people by surprise, but the UN has not used the term “Jewish state” since 1947. Resolution 181 then called for a “Jewish state” and an “Arab state,” with gerrymandered borders designed to craft Jewish and Arab majorities in each state. But the attempt was rendered obsolete when Zionist forces established “Israel” on a much greater swath of territory that had, in total, held a substantial Arab majority, and expelled most of the Arab residents. As refugees, according to the Geneva Conventions, those Arab residents have the right to return to their homes, villages, towns and cities. But their return would eliminate the Jewish majority in what became “Israel,” so Israel hasn’t allowed this.
Hence the UN cannot confirm Israel as a Jewish state (i.e., a state that can legitimately sustain a Jewish majority) without contradicting international law regarding the right of refugees. When the UN refers to “Israel” today, it does not understand Israel as the “Jewish state” in the old ethnic-majority terms of 1947, because Israel can be granted no “right” to an ethnic demography that would prevent the return of refugees.
Also, times have simply changed. In 1947, ethnic nationalism still made some belated sense, although it was already discredited by the dreadful abuses wreaked by Germany and Japan. Today, recognizing the “right” of any state to compose itself legally as an ethnic-majority state would clearly flout UN conventions on human rights and non-discrimination. The UN and EU therefore cannot openly endorse Israel’s right to compose itself as one. The significance of this decision is often overlooked. If tax exemption is a form of subsidy, then church property tax exemption is a clear violation of the establishment clause of the First Amendment.
